Pulling travel Trailer

by Jerry
(Somerset, Ky)

I am thinking of pulling my 24 ft travel trailer from Somerset, Ky down to St Pete, Florida with my 1997 Chevy C1500 pickup truck. The truck is in very good condition has a 350 cu in V8 motor and is not 4x4. I have the sway bars a weight distribution bars and heavy hitch. The camper is a 1987 Coachmen and is also in good condition and has new tires and brakes. The camper weighs 3,340 lbs. My question is do you think this trip is to much for my truck?

You should be ok
by: Anonymous

The past 2 summers I hauled a 16ft trailer, with around 2,500 lbs of lumber, supplies etc. to the Burning Man Event in the Nevada desert. a 330 mile trip, with a 2006 Toyota Tundra (V6). It sounds like your truck is a lot beefier than what I have, and the loads are similar, (yours might actually be smaller). I was able to cross the Sierra's and the Nevada desert with no problems.

Your Truck
by: Anonymous

Do some research on your specific truck and find out how much weight it can pull. I would check the manual. I also agree with the first comment. Try calling a travel information center.

Call Kentucky Dept of Travel
by: Anonymous

For all the info you could need for taking your trip, you should call the Kentucky Dept of Travel in Frankfort KY 1-800-225-8747. From my own experience, I think you should be fine. Your trailer is not too long. And the weight is not too heavy. Be sure the brakes on your trailer are sufficient enough - I know this is one thing that is very important!

i AM CURIOUS TOO!
by: Anonymous

We have a 97 Ford f-150 that barely has 100,000 miles on it.We bought a 30 foot RV that on the title weighs 3000. The book in the truck says it will pull 7000 pounds. Maybe if you find out your load level for your truck then you would know more. We are thinking the same question. Our truck is a V-8, not a 6 which seems like it would do fine with the sway bar and transmission cooler, etc. But my husband is freaking out because we are in Texas and wanting to go to Colorado. He thinks the increase in sea level will make it even worse on the truck to pull this RV.

Someone please give us both some info before my husband sells the RV of my dreams!!

Test run
by: Anonymous

It seems like it would be Ok. I know Chevy's can be tough. I would give it a test run and maybe make a short trip first to see how well it does. You never really know until you actually get out on the road.
