Waterproof Matches

by amanda
(NH)

At the top of my personal list when I go camping is waterproof matches. A few years ago my husband and our two kids, seven and eight took a camping trip to the Adirondack Mountains.

We stopped on the way up and bought supplies for a camp meal of hot dogs, hamburgers and baked beans. We had borrowed a friend's canoe and chose an island to camp on.

It was a beautiful day and a beautiful spot. We explored the island, got hungry and I went to start a fire to cook on. Well, our water supply had leaked onto the matches and they were no longer usable.

We dined on cold hot dogs and beans that night. Not the end of the world, but now we always have waterproof matches on hand.

The most important....fire

by Timotei
(Oradea, Romania, Europe)

I think that the most important object that you must have in a camping bag is the flint, or the silex. It is used in making fire.

It gives a 3,250 degrees spark that will fire up pretty anything for you...

Duct tape: you can fix almost anything with duct tape, from a leaky tent to broken radiator hoses.

Camping Check List - Your Tested Tent

by Annemarie
(Indiana)

Usable tent

Usable tent

Your tested tent is the most important thing on your camping list. I've gone camping in a situation where I have forgotten my tent, and another time when my tent had never been used and was so tiny that I could only sleep in it if I laid diagonally.

So not only should you HAVE a tent, but you should try it out once before you are at the site. It will be easier to set up if you're already familiar, and you'll know that you can fit.

If you simply set it up in the backyard you are a step ahead. I've got a Coleman tent and its really easy to set up, but hard to fit back in the bag, so advance practice helps with that too.

Water purification bottle: Gotta have clean water

by C. Indy
(St Paul, MN)

At the top of my camping list is clean drinking water. If you are going on a long camping trip or are going camping in an unfamiliar area, a purification bottle is necessary to make sure you have the clean drinking water you need.

Water purification bottles are not difficult to use and weigh a lot less then bringing jugs of water. The purification tablets are not expensive and are available at most sports equipment stores and online.

The tablets kill germs and bacteria that are naturally in rivers, streams, and lakes, and make the water clean enough to drink. I would never want to get caught without fresh water so a water purification bottle is on the top of my list.

Sunscreen

It is the worst to be stuck in the sun without suncreen or after a sunburn!

Water is the most important! - Camping Checklist

The most important thing needed on a camping trip is water.

Water and food are completely necessary to survive on a camping trip in the situation that you were lost. It would be impossible to live without water.

That is why it is the most important thing needed on a camping trip.

This is True

I think the bigger challenge for campers is hauling in the water or trying your luck at water purification from a nearby water source.
